Police in Wear Valley and Teesdale are targeting parked cars where mobile phones, handbags or valuables are left on view. They will send the vehicle's owner a letter advising them to take more care.
Sergeant Keith Mitchell said: "They shouldn't leave anything at all, but if they do it should be locked in the boot. Anything lying around is an obvious attraction to thieves and this is an effort to reduce the risk."
