PLANS for a state-of-the-art athletics training development have been unveiled.
The £400,000 scheme is the brainchild of the East Cleveland Athletic Track Association, which was formed by New Marske Harriers Athletics Club, Redcar Running Club, Loftus Athletics Club, Redcar and Cleveland Schools Athletic Association and Cleveland Orienteering Klub.
The group is being helped by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to bid for National Lottery money and has secured match funding from local businesses.
The scheme, proposed for a former landfill site at Hob Hill in Saltburn, would involve a six-lane track for 110m and 110m hurdles, a four-lane track for 200m and two lanes for 400m.
There will be a specialist high jump area capable of supporting court games, and a special area for classes to practice throwing the javelin together.
There are also plans for a shot put area, facilities for pole vaulting, hammer and discus throwing and a long jump and triple jump sand pit.
The scheme would provide training and competition opportunities for local clubs, schools and the public in athletics and team sports such as rugby and football.
The scheme also meets national guidelines for developing athletics in young people.
The proposal will be discussed by the council's planning committee at its meeting on August 8.
