WAR veterans have gathered for an emotional weekend-long reunion to commemorate the Battle of Kohima.
Field Marshall Lord Inge - the last holder of the rank of Field Marshall - took the salute and march past by veterans of the Kohima campaign at York Minster today.
The reunion has taken place annually in York to mark the battle which saw Allied forces halt the advance of the Japanese army in Asia in 1944.
In 1942, the Army's 2nd Division had deployed to India where, with the Royal Scots, the Durham Light Infantry and others, it mounted a famous campaign to relieve the embattled garrison at Kohima. Despite being hampered by monsoon rain, Allied soldiers succeeded in taking Kohima in hand-to-hand fighting.
Veterans were entertained at York's Imphal Barracks over the weekend, seeing performances by Army bands and a display of World War Two vehicles by the Khaki Chums military vehicle preservation society.
