YOUNGSTERS from a pioneering education scheme were praised for their achievements at a presentation evening.

The young people all attend Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's Education Other Than At School scheme at the Eston Centre, near Middlesbrough.

The scheme is for youngsters who, for reasons, such as truancy and behavioural problems, do not attend a mainstream school.

At the event, the youngsters received their Record of Achievement folders from the mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Vilma Collins.

Headteacher Enid Thirkell presented the Robert Willian Thirkell Award for Perseverance to Kendra Hart.

The award, named after Mrs Thirkell's late father-in-law, marks outstanding achievement, despite lots of difficulties.
