YOUNGSTERS have been rewarded for their hard work with an end-of-term spending spree.

Sixty-five year ten pupils at Easington Community School, in East Durham, received £50, £100 and £250 vouchers to spend in McGurks store, in Sunderland, and WH Smith, in Newcastle.

They received the awards for making progress towards their Student Learning Account targets.

The initiative is funded by Easington and Seaham Education Action Zone (EAZ) and is designed to motivate youngsters to do well at school.

Student Learning Account coordinator Neil Larkin said: "It's fantastic to see the youngsters being rewarded for all their hard work. I am delighted with their progress and attitude."

McGurks is also supporting the Education Action Zone by backing Easington and Glendene School's bid to become a specialist Sports College. The store has donated 20 trophies to the school for prize-giving assemblies to promote sporting achievement.

The EAZ is negotiating with WH Smith to provide literary support to zone schools
