NINETY talented pupils from the North-East are to begin their summer holidays with a week at school.

However, this will be a classroom with a difference, as the gifted youngsters involved from the borough of Stockton take part in a summer school with an oriental theme.

Organised by Excellence in Cities and the Education Action Zone, the aim is to enrich and extend the education of the pupils, as they move to new key stages in their education.

The summer school, at the University of Durham, Stockton Campus has been funded by a £27,000 grant from the Department for Education and Skills.

The oriental theme was chosen because 2001 has been designated the Year of Japan and the university has strong links with the country. Pupils will study Japanese, make kites and take part in modern dance.

The event will also provide a chance for about 20 teachers to extend their skills.
