STUDENT shot-putter Samantha Coulson is making her way in the world of athletics.

The 15-year-old pupil at Northallerton College has just put in a promising performance in the English Schools National Championship.

She won the right to represent North Yorkshire at national level after coming second in the county championships at York, last month.

Competing in the nationals at Exeter, she managed a creditable 14th in the intermediate girls' category - an improvement on her 20th place the year before.

But Sammy, who lives at Scruton, is still young for her age group - and plans to train even harder in a bid to do even better next year.

A member of Richmond and Zetland Harriers, Sammy also captains the Northallerton College girls' athletics team, which became the Hambleton and Richmondshire area champions recently at a meeting in Middlesbrough
