A MALE voice choir with a long history has launched a recruiting campaign in an attempt to attract new members.

Stockton Male Voice Choir was formed in 1948, and has been going strong since.

It has only 24 members, but would like to have at least double that by the start of the new season, in September.

Choir member Vince Carroll believes that recruiting members is not just a problem that lies with the Stockton choir.

He said: "It seems as though younger people are not interested in singing, when in fact they are a little bit hesitant about standing on a platform in front of large crowds of people and singing.

"Many people often sing in the bath and shower, but when it comes to doing the same in public they clam up. They also have a fear of reading the music.

"However, these fears are often unfounded. The vast majority of people in choirs cannot read music, but are taught to do so. It is not absolutely necessary to be able to do so."

In an attempt to attract interest among younger people, the choir is organising a young composer competition, with cash prizes for the top three entries.

It is open to students at schools and colleges throughout Teesside, who are under 18 at the end of August next year.

The piece, which can be no longer than four minutes, is for unaccompanied voices, or with a piano.

Five pieces will be selected for a special concert, and the top three chosen by a panel of judges.

Choir member Wallace Sayer hopes the competition will spark a lot of interest in the area.

He said: "Our recruiting campaign is not aimed at budding Pavarottis. Anyone who enjoys singing in the bath, or while watching rugby matches, is more than welcome to come along.

"All male vocalists are welcome to attend, whether young or more mature."
