PEOPLE were given the chance to experience the thrills and spills of jet skiing at the weekend.

Round one of the British Waterways Tees Challenge took place beside the Tees Barrage, in Stockton, with some of the sport's top competitors showing how skilful it can be.

Liz Bielby, from Tees Personal Watercraft Club, said: "It's a privilege to have the championships back in the North-East for the third time."

British Waterways, which looks after navigation on the River Tees, is the sole sponsor for the three rounds of the challenge.

Alan Slater, British Waterways manager for the Tees, said: "The River Tees is an ideal venue for all water sports. We were very pleased to welcome back the jet ski championships to the waterway.

"Everyone had an enjoyable time as well as soaking up the atmosphere on one of the loveliest river banks in the North of England."
