ONE of Durham's best-known figures has died after an 18-month battle against cancer.

Bobby Bryden, 46, of Sherburn Hill, was a freeman of the City of Durham and known throughout the city for his love of horses and pigeons.

His funeral took place at St Giles' Church, in Durham City, where he and his wife, Irene, were married 22 years ago. His coffin was carried on a horse-drawn hearse.

Mrs Bryden said: "Bobby always loved horses so it was really fitting for him. He was a real character and the sort of person who would do anything for everybody. We are all going to miss him so much."

Mr Bryden worked for Transco, but was a stable lad in Bishop Auckland for several years.

Mrs Bryden said: "That's where his love of horses started, and he was always in demand to break in horses.

"He also got into pigeon racing. He wasn't very good, but it was a hobby for him and he really enjoyed it."

Mr Bryden also leaves two children, Robert, 20, and Amanda, 18.
