A NEW series of guided walks is giving hikers an insight into County Durham's history.

Durham County Council prepared the programme so that people can get out and about despite restrictions on walking in the countryside.

The walks, which started on Sunday with two routes around Seaham, are designed to give people a guide to the history of the county's towns, villages and hamlets.

The council's director of environment and technical services, Chris Tunstall, said: "Many people probably don't realise the wealth of interest and good walking there is to be had, and this programme is a good way to find out more.

"It's also an opportunity both for walkers and those who walk less often to go somewhere different, meet new people and have fun learning about their area.''

On Sunday, Gloria and Neville Anderson will outline the histories of Beamish and Pelton. The walk starts at the Eden Place picnic area, Beamish, at 10am.

The walks are suitable for all the family and cost £2 or £1 for concessions.

The walks programme is available from libraries, or by contacting 0191-383 4144.

The council's autumn programme, which begins in October, will include walks on public rights of way.
