A PUBLIC inquiry starts today into plans to demolish a pub.
Built by Middlesbrough's first mayor, Henry Bolckow, in 1860, The Ladle is believed to be the only surviving building of its type in Middlesbrough.
Whitbread wants to replace it with a modern pub, hotel and drive-through restaurant.
Two days have been set aside for the inquiry into an appeal by Whitbread after the brewery's plans were rejected by Middlesbrough Borough Council.
The inquiry is being held at Middlesbrough Town Hall.
It was revealed last night that members and friends of Stewart Park and Marton Heritage Group have collected 4,472 signatures for a protest petition.
