A RESIDENTS' association is hoping to put the record straight on what will be provided at its proposed community house.

Chilton West Residents' Association is planning to take over a house in Coleridge Road in the village to use as a base.

But there is some confusion as to what the house will be used for. A newsletter to residents says much of the information circulating in the village is "based on speculation and guesswork and is widely inaccurate".

The letter points out that the proposal is for a community house, not a community centre, and will not be used for youth activities.

The police, DSS, community force, Sedgefield Borough Council, Bishop Auckland College, the Citizen's Advice Bureau and other agencies have all said they would be interested in providing services from the house.

It is hoped that photocopying and other secretarial services, Internet access and training will also be available.

The newsletter adds: "Some limited evening openings would be offered to suitable organisations, subject to stringent noise and nuisance regulations.

"No alcohol or smoking will be allowed on the premises and no unsupervised children will be allowed at any time."

The association is forming a set of rules for the house and draft copies can be inspected at the village library.

A questionnaire detailing the group's plans for the house has now been circulated for comments from residents.
