Lifeguards rescued a young girl after she got into difficulty at a popular foreshore at the weekend.

Beach lifeguards at Redcar, east Cleveland, helped the girl after she was swept off her feet "wave-dodging" at high tide.

The incident, on Saturday afternoon, left the 12-year-old frightened, but otherwise unhurt.

Foreshore manager Paul Castle said the girl was among a group of three wave-dodging on the lifeboat slipway at about 4pm on Saturday, and was swept off her feet.

"Her friends tried to pull her out of the water, but simply didn't have the strength. The lifeguards took charge of the situation and pulled her clear. It was only ankle deep water, but the girl was taught a very important lesson," said Mr Castle.

In a separate incident, Cleveland Search and Rescue Team were in action for the 13th time this year on Sunday when a Redcar woman hurt her leg while walking in Errington Woods, near Marske.

The accident was seen by rescue team member Carl Faulkner, who was out walking with his own family. He alerted the search and rescue team.

The woman was treated on the scene by rescue volunteers and ambulance paramedics, and later taken to Middlesbrough General Hospital.
