MORE than 500 youngsters from all social backgrounds are taking part in a series of summer of activities.
County Durham Young Offending Service (YOS) is running Splash 2001, a five-week programme of activities funded by the Youth Justice Board.
The scheme is one of several social inclusion schemes across the county co-ordinated by the Youth Offending Service.
Christina Blythe, head of County Durham Youth Offending Service, said: "Splash 2001 is unique among schemes in that it is socially inclusive.
"Groups include a range of young people, including some who have begun to offend.
"The focus is the prevention of anti-social behaviour and crime, constructive use of leisure time and development of key skills."
The programme kicked off on Monday and, so far, has included a drama workshop in Murton and a mountain biking event in Hamsterley Forest.
Other activities will range from camping, canoeing and indoor climbing.
Highlights will include a music gig, a visit to Durham County Cricket Club and a CD recorded by local youth bands who have written songs about growing up in County Durham.
The first Splash event took place last year and catered for 100 young people.
