YOUNGSTERS are being blamed for vandalism on one of east Cleveland's most ancient monuments.
Cleveland Police said extensive damage has been been caused to the 12th Century Gisborough Priory.
The priory, which is owned by Lord Guisborough, is run by English Heritage and in the past few days there has been severe damage to the eastern boundary wall.
Police say they believe the culprits are a gang of 12 to 15-year-olds who are digging away at mortar and smashing stones with iron bars taken from a nearby churchyard.
This has caused stones to come loose and is weakening the walls of the priory. It is thought that the cost of repairing the walls could run into several thousands of pounds.
Inspector Tom Brown, from Guisborough Police, said: "The damage to the priory has been caused by mindless vandalism. Gisborough Priory is part of our heritage and this is wanton damage of the worst kind."
The police are also warning parents not to let their children play near the priory because there are large metal spikes sticking out of the wall to prevent the walls being climbed. Police are concerned that if the walls are climbed, the supports could give way and children could impale themselves.
