A TEENAGER is a step closer to achieving his dream of being a professional footballer after he was selected for trials to play for England.
Tony McMahon, 15, of Evenwood, has always wanted to be a professional footballer.
So far, his talents have gained him a place in Middlesbrough Football Club's youth team who have nominated him for trials for the under-16 England Squad.
Tony was stunned when he received a letter from the FA asking him to go to Lilleshall Hall, near Newport, at the end of August, for the trials.
He said: "It would be a dream come true if I could play for England. I am over the moon."
The invitation came only days after Tony was chosen to play cricket for Durham County in a friendly against Australia.
His parents Tracy and Tony have backed him from day one.
Mrs McMahon said: "We are very very proud of Tony. He really is dedicated and trains three nights a week."
Fellow Boro player, Andrew Taylor, from Hartlepool, has also been selected for the trials.
