A NORTH YORKSHIRE councillor has confirmed politics played a part in his decision to quit a local authority he joined two years ago.
Brian Smith, who has represented the Catterick ward since he was elected in 1999, had already considered his position after a new job as a teacher in Middlesbrough added to his workload.
However, a discussion with the leaders of Richmondshire District Council persuaded him to stay on.
It was agreed he would sit on fewer committees to help balance his professional and public duties.
However, there has been tension in the council chamber recently, with a breakaway group splitting the independents.
And, yesterday, Mr Smith admitted he was uncomfortable with the new order during meetings at council headquarters Swale House.
"I felt the hardening of political attitudes meant there was no room left for a real independent," he said. "I am saddened in a way but, for me, I believe it is the right decision."
Mr Smith was a member of the Richmondshire Association of Independent Councillors. Who takes over the seat will be decided at a by-election, on Thursday, August 30.
