FINAL preparations were being made last night to ensure the success of the North-East's version of the Chelsea Flower Show.
Now in its 12th year, the Gateshead Summer Flower Show opens at noon today - the first time the event has started on a Friday.
It includes floral displays, children's entertainment, a craft fair, and indoor market.
Among the unusual items for sale are chimeneas, clay ovens traditionally used to make bread in India and Mexico. There will also be demonstrations of ethnic cooking products, including a Burmese barbecue.
Other attractions include Gateshead Borough Council's award-winning Chelsea Flower Show display, which celebrates The Royal British Legion's 80th anniversary.
Marian Foster, the face of Great Gardens on BBC Look North, will present her live Gardeners' Phone In from noon tomorrow. There will be chances to win a garden makeover and a holiday abroad.
Admission is £6, £4.50 concessions, and free for accompanied children under 18 years.
A free park and ride will run every 15 minutes from the MetroCentre coach park to the show site at Central Nursery, Whickham Highway, Lobley, Hill, signposted from the A1.
