A NORTH YORKSHIRE paramedic has gone into print, hoping to educate dog-lovers across the country in a rare breed he is well qualified to discuss.
Richmond's Roy Bebbington won a first at Crufts with his own Wire-haired Vizsla, called Tola - one of only half a dozen in Yorkshire.
His new book is thought to be the first written about a breed which was introduced to Britain just ten years ago.
"The breed began in Hungary in 1930," said Mr Bebbington, yesterday. "The Hungarians used the smooth-haired breed for hunting but the harsh winter conditions took their toll, so the hunting fraternity bred a dog with a winter coat, namely the wire-haired variety.
"I want people to know what the breed is capable of doing, so I wrote one section on their use in falconry and then approached other owners from all over England and Scotland who work their dogs in different disciplines, ranging from deer-stalking, shooting, field trails and tracking.''
Mr Bebbington's dog is featured on the front cover of The Wire-Haired Vizsla - a Versatile Breed, which costs £3.50, including postage and packing, and is available by writing to 1 Arklie Terrace, Hudswell, North Yorkshire, DL11 6BH.
"They are beautiful creatures, so placid and laid-back yet an excellent working dog," he added.
