TWO Derwentside entrepreneurs have found their skill in working with leather is leading them into new areas, from re-upholstering classic cars to keeping a disabled dog mobile with a tailor-made harness.
Demand from customers has led English Pride Leathers, of Consett, into designing and supplying an amazing variety of leather goods after only a few weeks in business.
The company was set up by Michael Chisholm and his brother-in-law David Adams.
It has carved out a niche market among equestrian groups, bikers, and customers looking for individual leather clothing.
Mr Adams said: "We took a stand at a local show and were approached by classic car enthusiasts searching for a company that could re-upholster their vehicles to the original condition. We have completed a 70-year-old Morris 1000 and been asked to estimate for three 1940 double-decker buses.
"A vet recommended us to the dog owner and we were able to provide a tailor-made harness for his Yorkshire terrier, so he is mobile again."
Mr Chisholm is one of a handful of people in the country skilled in footwear pattern designing and cutting.
He said: "We were keen to move into other areas as well as making shoes, but have been amazed at the amount and variety of business that has come our way, all by word of mouth."
