THOUSANDS of visitors from across the world visit Durham to marvel at its historic splendours.
Now they can tour the city in style, relaxing in a horse-drawn landau, after Cathedral Carriages launched Durham's first horse carriage service yesterday.
For £10 a time visitors can take two day-time routes - between Old Elvet and Elvet Hill Road - or the evening service that runs from Durham Cathedral to the Sands.
Clydesdales horses, Jack and Eddie, work from a terminus opposite the Royal County Marriott Hotel, in Old Elvet, and are set to become a familiar sight around the city.
If the business takes off, they could be joined by two more horses.
The scheme is the brainchild of Dennis Sweeney and landlord Arthur Walsh.
Mr Walsh said: "The feedback has been excellent. The lads have had a few trots round and people were asking for phones numbers because they want to hire us for weddings.
"They have horse taxis in Dublin, Belgium and York. Durham might not be as big, but it is a beautiful city. Riding around gives you a different view of the city.''
Durham Mayor George Cowper said: "I think it's a great venture and I think it will become a tourist attraction."
