LEADERS of local councils in the Helmsley area are to meet to explore ways of benefiting from a new Government scheme to aid rural transport.
Helmsley Town Council was told that the parish councils of Ampleforth, Oswaldkirk, Sproxton, Beadlam, Harome and Rievaulx have agreed to attend a meeting it is calling to investigate possibilities.
Lord Feversham, chairman of Helmsley Town Council, said initially it hoped to get funding for village surveys to ascertain residents' need for better public transport.
He said that £15m was available nationwide to aid schemes.
One possibility is the use of mini-buses. Lord Feversham said much of the time many of them are not being used.
A brokerage scheme could be set up if the parish councils decide to pursue the provision of an improved transport service
