DURHAM City will welcome the judges for this year's Britain in Bloom competition on Thursday, August 16.
The city is representing the North-East region in this year's competition.
Durham city councillor David Bell, who has special responsibility for environmental matters, said: "We plant many thousands of bulbs, flowers and shrubs each year which make Durham look really spectacular.
"What makes all the difference, however, is the way in which local people take such a pride in their own gardens and open spaces.
"People who live and work here undoubtedly make a huge contribution to our chances of success in Britain in Bloom.
"We are delighted at the combined effort, and I think the combined effect will impress the judges."
Durham City won Britain in Bloom in 1995 and was the first city in the UK to be chosen twice as the host city for the Britain in Bloom National Awards presentation.
Anyone who would like to help the city's chances of winning should call Andrew Jackson at Durham City Council on 0191-301 8693.
