DRIVERS are being reminded not to use the Yarm green route bus lanes during the peak evening period.
Between 3.30pm and 6pm, from Monday to Friday, only buses are allowed to use the green lane.
The lane, which is clearly marked in green tarmac, enables buses to avoid queues of stationary traffic that are heading into Yarm, from Eaglescliffe.
The scheme, which was implemented by Stockton Borough Council, is enforced by the police, who are responsible for making sure that other drivers do not abuse the priorities given to buses.
Offending drivers using the bus lane during its times of operation will be issued with a fixed penalty notice.
David lynch, the council's team leader for traffic management, said: "The route was put in place to improve passenger waiting facilities, and to generally improve bus travel by making journeys more pleasant, with the least possible delays.
"But, it is important that, for the facility to work to its best advantage, drivers adhere to the correct times when to use it and when not to use it."
