Durham and District League - King George V, who are firmly entrenched at the foot of Division One, were looking to an 8-2 victory at Coxhoe as they led 55 shots to 48 with 15 ends played.

However, in a remarkable turn round, the visitors dropped 43 shots in the last six ends and as they only gained 21 they went down 6-4 with a shot score of 91-76.

There was a change at the top of the First Division when Ever Ready/ Craghead moved into first place, one points head of former leaders, Leeholme, who were held to a home draw by Crook Glenholme, who are now just 11 points behind Leeholme with a match in hand.

Trimdon, who have languished at the foot of the Second Division for weeks, shocked the visiting promotion hopefuls from Nevilles Cross by winning by six points.

This moved Trimdon off the bottom but they need more results of this nature to avoid relegation.

Trimdon won by 80 shots to 61.

Bishop Auckland travelled to Second Division leaders, Wolsingham and pulled off a surprise victory by 62 shots to 55.

The Second Division was further tightened up when Willington moved up to share second place with their beaten hosts at Crook Glenholme, while Leeholme and Chilton moved into promotion threatening positions with maximum wins.

There was no change at the top of the First Division with both Cockton Hill and Sherburn recording four point victories. However, Sherburn's win over the visiting Spennymoor A opened up a six points gap in the race for the runners-up spot.

Sherburn beat Spennymoor A by 67 shots to 40.

Held over two weekends last month, the finals were monopolised by Stockton Elm Tree Social Club with their players winning 13 out of 20 events.

The ladies won five of their eight events while the men took eight of 12.

The winners now go forward to represent their club and country in the English Finals at Skegness later this month.

Cleveland County Bowling Association

West End BC had their finest win in their 100-year history when they beat South Cave BC, Humberside 89 shots to 84 last Saturday to clinch the Northern Area Championship of the EBF Club Team Durham Centenary Trophy. West End will now play the champions from the South at Skegness on August 18 to determined who is the national club champion.

The Owton Lodge (Hartlepool) club won their Zone Final match against Walkington (Beverley) 44-40. The Yorkshiremen were 12 shots up at the three quarter stage but a determined rally saw the Durham Standard bearers win on both rinks.

Lodge are in action again on Sunday at York where they meet the winners of the Ilkeston (Derbyshire) v Shepshed Town (Leicestershire) clash.
