THIS small pony has been viciously stabbed in a sickening attack which has also left it badly bruised and beaten.
The animal is now recovering from its ordeal in the safe haven of Ramshaw Rescue Centre, near Bishop Auckland.
It was found by police in a distressed state weaving in and out of traffic on the A688 at St Helen on Wednesday afternoon.
It was then captured and taken to the rescue centre where it has been treated by a vet for its injuries.
Kate Wilson, from the centre, said: "She is such a sweet innocent little thing. If only she could talk then she could tell me who did this.
"She is absolutely shattered through stress and all she wants to do is sleep it off. Seeing her now it's so heartbreaking. Why would anyone do this?"
Bishop Auckland Police and the RSPCA have both confirmed they will prosecute whoever carried out the cruel attack and are looking for any information that would lead to the owner being found.
Miss Wilson said: "I believe this has been carried out by someone who has stabbed the pony with a Stanley knife and kicked it with hob nail boots. She is covered in bruises. Whoever, did this should be made an example of."
