AN up-and-coming chart band helped ensure this year's Richmond Live was the best yet.

The programme was extended over two days for the first time this year.

Friday night's show was aimed largely at teenagers, with local bands leading the entertainment.

As many as 1,000 youngsters gathered at The Batts, in the shadow of the town's castle, enjoying the free show in the evening sunshine.

The programme resumed at 11am on Saturday, with performances on three different stages, including appearances by the Cosmic Rough Riders - fresh from a slot on Top of the Pops - and former Squeeze, Pretenders and Mike and the Mechanics member, Paul Carrack.

Richmond Live chairman, Mike Griffiths said: "It really has been the best event we have ever staged, with about 10,000 people attending over the entire weekend.

"People seem to have found out Richmond Live is a fun, friendly, happy event with a fantastic atmosphere."
