HOSPICE fundraisers are aiming to collect a million coins this summer from holidaymakers coming back with change in their pockets.
The Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland will accept all currencies, including pre-decimal sixpences and pennies.
The hospice has teamed up with collectors and dealers in the currency market for the new initiative, which aims to help it to meet its £325,000 annual running costs.
Fundraiser Beryl Anderson said: "With many of our European neighbours introducing the Euro, unfortunately people will not be able to use the coins and notes next year."
Coins can be left at the hospice, in Woodhouse Lane, Bishop Auckland, Mondays to Fridays, between 9.15am and 4.45pm, or telephone (01388) 603003 for collection.
