POLICE investigating a double murder will this morning decide whether to press charges against a North-East man.
On Sunday, West Yorkshire Police secured permission from magistrates to hold the 40-year-old Middlesbrough man for a further 36 hours for questioning over the murders of former professional rugby league player, David Nelson, and his friend, Joseph Montgomery.
The pair were shot at the Wilson's Arms pub in Seacroft, Leeds, on July 22, while a children's party was taking place.
Mr Nelson, 38, who played for Sheffield, died at the scene, while 39-year-old Mr Montgomery died from his injuries the next day.
Yesterday, Paul Bryan, 40, of Blackpool, appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court charged with the murders of both men. Magistrates remanded him in custody until a plea and directions hearing at Leeds Crown Court, on August 13.
Four other people who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have been released without charge.
Mr Nelson and Mr Montgomery were regulars at the Wilson's Arms and lived nearby.
Father-of-one Mr Nelson, who scored 50 tries during his professional career, played for Sheffield Eagles, Castleford and Wakefield, taking part in the 1992 Challenge Cup Final.
