A MOBILE youth service to help prevent anti-social behaviour in Darlington is on the road during the summer holidays for the first time.
The Blitz bus, which was designed in consultation with youngsters, usually only operates during term time.
It is currently visiting priority areas -Lascelles Park, Eastbourne Park, North Park and North Lodge Park and The Denes - plus schools in the town.
The bus has various facilities, including computer games and sports equipment, but it can also be used as a place for youngsters to meet and socialise.
The bus was in Darlington Market Square yesterday lunchtime and at Haughton School last night. It will be at the Asda store car park, in Whinfield, today.
Sergeant Graham Hall, of Darlington police, said: "The idea is that, rather than chase them away, we want to build up a relationship between the young people and the police.
"We are trying to talk to them to give them what they want and what they are asking for."
Keith Dillon, a detached outreach worker who oversees the bus, said: "It is to stop anti-social behaviour, because if they are involved in the bus they are not going to get into trouble."
He said he had already received some positive feedback from people living in areas where the bus has visited.
