ASBESTOS surveys are to be carried out at more than 600 council-owned properties as part of a £1m scheme.
North Yorkshire County Council has announced plans to carry out the surveys in all its properties, including offices schools, libraries and social services buildings.
The five-year programme was launched after extensive discussions with the Health and Safety Executive. Results will ensure all property managers have detailed information about any asbestos present in their buildings and will enable designers and contractors to manage any risks safely.
A register of all buildings will also be put together, along with hi-tech computerised drawings.
Brian Williams, head of building design and management, said: "The county council takes its responsibility for asbestos management - and support to property users - very seriously. Our policy on asbestos adheres to current Health and Safety Executive guidelines.
"With the information that will be available to us through this survey and the on-going technical and practical support from my staff, the council is determined to ensure a safe and healthy living and working environment throughout its properties."
The survey starts with 20 schools and libraries in the Scarborough area during the summer holidays
