THE death of a man at a notorious suicide spot is not being treated as suspicious.

A 43-year-old local man was found under the Hownsgill Viaduct, at Hamsterley Mill, near Consett, by a police search team at 8pm, on Thursday.

Police were alerted by the man's worried family after he went missing, and officers found his abandoned car near the Derwent Walk, a local beauty spot.

They spotted his body when they looked down from the viaduct, known locally as Gill Bridge.

A police surgeon confirmed the death at the scene and his family have been informed. No more details are being released until all next of kin have been informed.

It is the second death at the spot in a week. Last Friday, the body of 20-year-old Jason Tate, a landscape gardener, from Consett, was found underneath the viaduct after he had been missing for five days.
