A GALLERY will celebrate the opening of Gateshead Millennium Bridge next month with an exhibition of photographs of another landmark bridge.
The Tyne Bridge, which has become the symbol of the North-East, was opened by King George V in 1928.
Although it is commonly thought it was the model for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the design was in fact developed by Mott Hay Anderson, for Australia.
But the smaller Tyne version was completed first and was described by The Scotsman newspaper at the time, as a work of "not merely local but national importance."
When Dorman Long built the bridge, it commissioned photographs of every stage, and they will be on display at the Side Gallery, Newcastle, from Saturday, September 8, to Sunday, September 30. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 3pm
