SEVENTEEN newly-crowned World champions will compete in the final televised meeting of the British season - the Norwich Union Classic - at Gateshead International Stadium on Sunday, writes FRANK JOHNSON.
Pride of place will go to Tyneside's adopted son, Jonathan Edwards, the triple jump world record holder who won back his title in Edmonton and was one of Britain's only two medallists along with third-placed decathlete Dean Macey.
The organisers of the Gateshead meeting have worked hard to make it a star-studded affair, attracting a host of the world's best athletes.
World champion Maurice Greene will compete in the 100m against Britain's Dwain Chambers, Christian Malcolm and Mark Lewis-Francis.
Greek 200m champion Kostas Kerderis will be there, but the race of the day, however, is expected to be the men's 400m, where world champions Avard Moncur, of the Bahamas and Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic will compete.
Tickets for the event are still available from Gateshead International Stadium, or through the 24-hour Ticketmaster Hotline (0870 444 4440).
