A POLICE collaboration with firefighters aimed at stamping out arsonists and hoax callers is to be expanded.
The Arson Task Force, set up nearly two years ago by Northumbria Police, has proven so successful in Newcastle West and Sunderland area commands that approval has been given to expand it into Gateshead and South Tyneside.
Newcastle West End was once labelled as the arson capital of Europe, with 73 per cent of fires caused by arsonists. But since the task force was set up, hoax and malicious calls have been reduced by 62 per cent, property fires by 24 per cent and rubbish fires by 33 per cent.
An extra £60,000 has been allocated through the government-funded Arson Control Forum. This money will go towards providing a police officer for the Gateshead and South Tyneside project.
The project, between Tyne and Wear Metropolitan Fire Brigade and Northumbria Police, will be based at the John Reid Community Fire Station.
Northumbria Police assistant Chief Constable Paul Leighton said: "Reducing hoax calls and arson allows the emergency services to concentrate their efforts where they are needed and will enhance the quality of life for all.
"This is another exciting example of the excellent partnership arrangements which exist in the North-East, and I am delighted it is with our colleagues in the fire service."
