A COUNCILLOR claims footpaths and roads are falling into disrepair because they are being maintained with cheap materials.
Sedgefield Borough Councillor Ben Ord has called on Durham County Council to stop using slurry seal, an alternative to Tarmac, for repairs in his Spennymoor ward, because he claims it erodes quickly.
He said: "Durham County Council insists on using it even though it's unsightly and uneconomical and residents are complaining about it.
"It erodes after a couple of years and after a while weeds grow through the cracks."
A spokeswoman for Durham County Council said: "Ithas proved a cost-effective method of maintaining footpaths in the past and it means we can maintain more footpaths for our money."
