A MAN was stabbed by a stranger as he made his way home from a night out, a court heard.
Christopher Cruddas had been drinking with friends in Durham City and was going to the Market Place to get a taxi when he was attacked by Adnan Qureshi.
Newcastle Crown Court heard that Qureshi, 19, who had been visiting his girlfriend, was on his way back from a party. He launched the attack after getting the impression that Mr Cruddas, 38, had upset his girlfriend.
Penny Moreland, prosecuting, said it appeared that a penknife was used in the stabbing.
Qureshi, a student, of Cambridge Terrace, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, admitted the stabbing but said it was in self defence. He denied wounding with intent.
The trial continues
