silver championship

Held at Harrogate golf club, the ladies had to cope with very poor conditions during their rounds, with heavy rain making conditions very difficult. However, Sara Garbutt played excellent golf and not only returned the best gross with a 68, but also led the Knaresborough Ladies A team to victory.

The winning team, Knaresborough A, with a gross 237 were Sara Garbutt 68, Sue Morton 80, Bridget Tasker, 89 and Liz Tibell 92, three best scores to count.

The winning team in the handicap competitions were the home club Harrogate A with a nett 222 made up of 72 Ruth Skaite (3); 73 Paula Simpson (3); 77 Cicely Horton (11) and 82 Alison Leaks (10), again, three best scores to count.

Best gross prize: 68 Sara Garbutt (Knaresborough); 2nd best gross 75 Ruth Skaife (Harrogate). The best nett 69 Myra McDougall (15) (Harrogate); 2nd 73 Sue Morton (7) (Knaresborough).

Harrogate Union Juniors v

Leeds Union Juniors

Played at Pannal golf club, the Harrogate Union Juniors faced a strong Leeds team for this annual match.

The morning foursomes started well for the Harrogate team with wins by Russell Brown and Daniel Dunn also Joe Buckley and John Goodacre, all from Harrogate, by margins of 4/3 and 6/4 respectively. Followed by one up victory for the Ilkley pair of Oliver Shaw and Chris Hughes. The other three match went Leeds' way.

It would be difficult to pick out individual performances in the afternoon singles as all team members contributed to the success of the Harrogate team. Victories by margins of 8/7 by Pannal's Chris Cooper; 8/6 by Pannal's Graham Douglas and 5/4 by Harrogate's John Goodacre only go to show the outstanding performance of the team which led to a comprehensive victory.

Russell Brown and Daniel Dunn won 4 and 3 over Ben Stephens and Paul Monaghan. Joe Buckley and John Goodacre won 6 and 4 over Paul Flaherty and Stephen Wagner. Oliver Shaw and Chris Hughes won one up over Garry Owen and Scott Summers. Mark Driver and James Sibbles lost one down to Tom Kaye and Leigh Greenwood. Graham Douglas and Chris Cropper lost 3 and 2 to Oliver Wagner and Andrew Davis. Ben Johnson and Mark Taylor lost 3 and 2 to Robert Darlison and Martin Holmes.

Bedale

A medal round competition for this week's players with an excellent 68 by Stan Suggitt winning the competition.

Leading scores: 68 Stan Suggitt (9); 70 George Hunt (15) and Ron Blenkinsop (19) position decided on countback. The best gross was an 85 by Brian Knapton.

Ladies

Peggy Burton Trophy

There was a changed format for this year with the competition played as an individual stableford on one day as opposed to knockout foursomes.

Results: 37 points Ann Naylor (31); 36 Margaret McMahon (21) and Marjorie Taylor (30), Wyn Thompson (28) and Verna Wilkinson (33). All positions decided on countback after what was an exceedingly close result.

Peacock Cup

This is a par or bogey competition. When ladies play the course is always a difficult test of golf, but some ladies seem to cope with a course in excellent condition, better than others.

Leading scores: +6 Dulcie Exelby (29); +5 Marjorie Taylor (30); +4 Carol Shaw (36).

Juniors

A busy time of year for Bedale Juniors who, during their summer holidays, are spending a good deal of their time competing in various club junior competitions and seeing their handicaps reduced in consequence.

Junior medal: 56 William Ibbotson (30); 59 Lawrence Eaglen (19); 65 Alexander Johnson (35); 69 Matthew Day (22). The lowest gross was achieved by Lawrence Eaglen with an excellent 78.

Junior open

With entries from far and wide for this popular competition, it is pleasing to report that home course advantage was the winner on the day for Craig Brown who returned an excellent 49 points in this stableford competition.

Leading scores Division One: 49 points C Brown (15); 44 A Bussey (14); 43 M Taylor (6); J Patterson (20) position decided on countback. As a result of his performance Craig Brown's handicap has now been reduced to 12.

Division Two: 46 points A Johnson (31); 38 Miss S Johnson (34); 31 M Hughes (31).

John Carr Trophy

Played as a bogey competition, James Patterson won the trophy and found that his handicap had been cut to 16.2.
