NEW boys Washington Nissan are aiming for a top-six finish in their debut season in the Albany Northern League, writes RAY SIMPSON.
After lifting the Wearside League title last year, Nissan are one of the favourites to go straight through the division but manager Gavin Liddle believes life won't be as easy as that.
He said: "It will be very difficult this season. We must learn to be patient. This time it will be brilliant to finish in the top six."
Nissan have managed to secure the transfers of several of their current players from their previous Northern League clubs, including striker Jason Melling, who was their top scorer last season. Liddle will also give youth its chance, and has included five teenagers in his squad to face Horden today.
The most attractive game in the First Division is between Dunston and Durham.
Dunston have brought in midfielder Alu Banguera from Jarrow Roofing.
But Durham, who led the league for most of last season, have fitness doubts over central defender Richard Ord and striker Micky Dunwell, while new signing Lee Ludlow is unavailable.
Champions Bedlington, who lost to Dunston in the pre-season Cleator Cup last week, start the defence of their title at Jarrow Roofing, and expect to be at full strength. Jarrow, meanwhile have brought in several new players, the most notable being keeper Gary Hogarth from Workington.
