THE secrets of Wear Valley's most impressive gardens will be revealed during the Bank Holiday, when they open their gates for charity.
People can wander around the 73 acre estate at Whitworth Hall Country Park, near Spennymoor on Sunday, August 26, between 2pm and 6pm.
The grounds of Whitworth Hall, the birthplace of Bobby Shafto, include a secret garden, woodland paths and Victorian walled garden, as well as Europe's most northerly vineyard.
On Monday, August 27, Birkheads Cottage Gardens and Nursery will be open between 2pm and 5pm.
The hill-top garden, near the village of Sunniside, contains more than 4,000 plants which give year-round colour and a view of the surrounding dales.
Situated east of the A6076 between Sunniside and Stanley, the garden is signposted between the Causey Arch and Tanfield Steam Railway. The events will raise money for the British Red Cross and admission is £2 for adults.
