THE Ferryhill Christmas Lights Fund has been boosted by a gift of £2,318, thanks in part to the efforts of the town's retiring mayor, Councillor Edith Whitfield.
Mrs Whitfield chose the appeal as her nominated charity during her term of office.
A series of fundraising events were held, including a concert by local band Rio, a raffle and tombola, and a meal.
The town needs about £15,000 to replace its Christmas lights in time for next year.
Jamie Corrigan, executive officer of Ferryhill Town Council, said: "Our Christmas lights are very much admired around the borough and we want to ensure this continues to be the case.
"We are still trying to raise the money required from businesses and other people and it is an on-going appeal."
