A MAN was punched to the ground and kicked by a gang as he walked home in Darlington in the early hours on Sunday.
The man, who has not been named by police, sustained head and face injuries after the unprovoked attack.
He was walking along Station Road, Darlington, at 12.50am when he was approached by three men.
One of the group punched him in the face and he fell to the ground.
All three gang members then kicked the victim around the head before running off when they were disturbed by passers-by.
A spokesman for Darlington police said: "This seems to have been a totally unprovoked attack.
"The victim sustained bruising and swelling to his face and head.
"If anyone was in the area at the time or witnessed the assault, they should call us."
One of the attackers was described as being 5ft 10in, with dark hair. He was said to be wearing a white shirt and dark trousers.
The victim was unable to provide descriptions of the other men.
