A NORTH-EAST Roman fort has been listed among the top ten museums in the world.
A national newspaper asked a panel of experts, including Loyd Grossman, the TV presenter and chairman of the Campaign for Museums, to name their favourite museums.
Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum, Wallsend, North Tyneside, was listed along with international attractions such as the Picasso Museum in Paris and the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, US.
The museum, which is at the far eastern end of Hadrian's Wall, includes the most extensively-excavated Roman forts in Europe and Britain's only reconstructed and working bath house.
Loyd Grossman wrote of it: "This is a museum conceived and run with passion.
"The bath house works with interactive and written displays to provide an excellent interpretation of Roman life in Britain. There's also an outstanding book shop which sells both popular and scholarly works.''
Curator Bill Griffiths said: "We are delighted to hear of this endorsement from some of the country's leading cultural figures.
"It is a great accolade for the museum and to all those individuals who have contributed towards the development of Segedunum and helped to make it such a success."
