PLANS to install road humps to slow down speeding cars have been abandoned because people do not want them.
Sunderland City Council proposed putting more than 100 of the traffic-calming devices on roads in the Millfield area of the city.
However, the £100,000 scheme is being dropped following strong objections from the residents of the area.
The council wanted to do something to reduce the number of accidents in the area, which has several busy roads and is close to the Sunderland Royal Hospital.
But residents voiced their opposition to council leader Colin Anderson at a public meeting.
They told him that they considered that the plan would be a waste of money and would cause damage to their vehicles.
Councillor Anderson said: "If you don't want humps we will go back to the environment department and say no humps.
