IN a graphic illustration of just why Jonathan Edwards is the world's number one triple jumper, the gold medallist leapt the distance of three cars yesterday.
The Newcastle-based triple jump champion launched this year's Rover Dream Team Challenge on his home patch at Gateshead International Stadium.
Edwards leapt beyond the cars, but at 12 metres overall it did not challenge his world record of 18 metres-plus.
He was watched by fitness fans from the region who have accepted the challenge to take on the nation's best athletes.
Members of the Power House gym, in Newcastle will join 1,000 men and women to compete against Edwards, as well as boxing Olympic gold medallist Audley Harrison, sprinter Darren Campbell and cyclist Jason Queally.
"It's a chance for ordinary people to pit themselves against extraordinary athletes," a spokesman for the challenge said.
The first of the regional heats of the Rover Dream Team Challenge will be held in Leeds on Sunday, September 2.
The final will take place in October, when the national athletes will take part.
