LOCAL people and British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) members are carrying out a clean-up operation at a wildlife area in Darlington.
Work on the Firthmoor grasslands, next to the Firthmoor estate, is part of a long-term project to raise awareness of the site and improving its recreational and educational value.
The trust manages the site for Darlington Borough Council and has created a number of ponds, wildlife habitats and butterfly meadows.
With increased help and support from the local community, the work will be extended to develop the site further, making it more attractive to visitors and wildlife.
Helen Tomb, project manager, said: "We are spending two days here, litter lifting, clearing the ponds and removing fly-tipping. One of the ponds is really bad, with shopping trolleys and gas cylinders, so it is hard work.
"About 12 kids have been helping, with volunteers from the local community centre and five of us from BTCV."
A steering groups is being set up to gather ideas for the development of the area.
