SAFEGUARDS are being introduced to protect customers attending car boot sales.
A code of practice, giving customers the same legal rights enjoyed when buying from a shop, have been agreed between Redcar and Cleveland Council and organisers of car boot sales at Redcar Racecourse, Tocketts Mill and Saltburn Pier.
Howard Turton, the council's principal trading standards officer, said: "We want to ensure consumers can make purchases with the knowledge that should something go wrong they may rely on the same legal rights against seller as a purchase made from a High Street shop."
Trading standards officers carry out regular checks on the markets, offering advice to traders and later will be making test purchases, with a warning that legal action will be taken if consumer protection legislation is still being flouted.
George Brooksbank, whose Northern Promotions company operates the sales at Redcar Racecourse, says the code is a good idea.
He said: "It's about targeting people who attend the sales, selling new and secondhand goods, but don't consider themselves to be in trade."
