The following Sunday, three Shildon junior members competed at the Evening Gazette Junior games Challenge 2001.

Boys and girls from five to 14 years represented the Borough of Gateshead or the City of Newcastle. First to go was Anthony Brown (Ferryhill) in the 11-12yrs 110m. Anthony, who represented Gateshead, finished third in 13.9. The winner was Adam Dalby (Gateshead) in 13.4.

In the boys 11-12yrs 800m Andrew Thompson (Kirk Merrington) ran an excellent race. Andrew took charge straight from the gun and set a very hot pace.
