FARMERS markets across the region are being promoted to try to combat the devastating effects of the foot-and-mouth crisis.
The National Association of Farmers Markets has initiated a programme of events to advertise the many markets which had to be rescheduled because of the foot-and-mouth crisis.
The cancellation of many of the markets has caused farmers, already suffering hardship, to lose another vital source of income.
To encourage people to attend the newly opened farmers markets, next month has been dedicated to them, and special events in Barnard Castle, South Shields, Bishop Auckland and Hexham will be held.
Cathie Tinn, regional coordinator for the Association of Farmers Markets said: "Farmers markets are a chance to sample the best our beautiful region has to offer, local specialities, mouth-watering cheeses, fresh fruit and local vegetables.
"What's more, they contribute a significant amount to the rural economy and other businesses in the towns where they are held."
Ms Tinn believes many people have misconceptions about farmers markets and how important they are to those involved.
She said: "So many people think the markets are just a chance to buy WI jam, but they are much more than that.
"Farmers markets have represented a light at the end of the tunnel for many small producers.
"They are an opportunity for farmers, fishermen and growers to diversify and become profitable again."
"All these people have been badly hit by the markets being cancelled because of foot-and-mouth.
"The markets are also a great pull for visitors to a town.
"Around 75 per cent of those who visit farmers markets travel more than 20 miles for the experience, which brings more money into the local area."
One farmer, who regularly contributes to markets in the area, said: "It is a chance to really do something for ourselves and to show people what we produce.
"People who try food from our stalls, usually come back for more."
Events planned for next month include stall holders' competitions in Barnard Castle, special menus at pubs and cafes in Hexham and Bishop Auckland and children's entertainers in Morpeth
